In 1989, she became a laureate of the "Mario Del Monaco" competition in Italy. In the same year, she participated in the premiere production of "The Gypsy Baron" in Baden, Austria, in the role of Saffi. The newspaper "Badener Zeitung" wrote: "In the role of Saffi, with her huge voice, the young Bulgarian Sonya Marinova was fire." The voice is brilliant, the technique is magnificent, with a beautiful legato that amazes in the last act. All this, as well as the refusal of any external effect, is deeply moving." Her stage partners include the great tenor Giacomo Aragall, Alexandrina Milcheva, Nikola Gyuzelev, Nikola Nikolov, Nikolay Gyaurov, and Yuri Mazurok.

In the period 1998-2001, she was a soloist at the National Opera in Prague, where she performed the central dramatic repertoire in "Nabucco", "Aida", "Don Carlos" by Verdi, "Nerone" by Boito, and others.
